If you have traveled between downtown Mount Vernon and West Mount Vernon recently, you have probably noticed a major change to the usual route.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is repainting the historic SR 536 Skagit River Bridge, also known locally as the Division Street Bridge or West Mount Vernon Bridge. It is the bridge’s first fresh coat of paint in 36 years, and construction is expected to continue into early 2027.
This work is necessary to preserve the bridge and extend its service life. At the same time, months of changed traffic patterns may make it harder for customers to reach restaurants, cafés, shops and other businesses on Mount Vernon’s west side.
Bridge Project at a Glance
Westbound traffic remains open except during announced full closures.
Eastbound traffic is closed throughout construction.
Eastbound detour: northbound Avon Allen Road → eastbound SR 20 → southbound I-5.
Expected completion: early 2027.
What Is Changing on the West Mount Vernon Bridge?
Throughout the painting project, vehicle traffic across the bridge is traveling westbound only. Drivers can still use SR 536 to reach West Mount Vernon from downtown, but eastbound drivers leaving the west side must use the designated detour.
WSDOT directs eastbound traffic north on Avon Allen Road, east on SR 20 and south on I-5. The agency has also announced several planned weekend and nighttime full closures during construction. Because schedules can change, drivers should check the official WSDOT SR 536 bridge project page before traveling.
A Small Detour Can Make a Big Difference to a Local Business
When reaching a business takes a little more time, it is easy to decide to visit another day. For a locally owned restaurant or shop, however, postponed visits can add up.
Small businesses often depend on steady community traffic. Even a temporary change in customer habits can affect the owners, cooks, servers and other local employees who keep these places running.
West Mount Vernon businesses are still open, still serving our community and still worth the trip. Construction may change how we reach them, but it does not change the quality, service and local character they provide.
Ways to Support West Mount Vernon Businesses
- Continue ordering from your favorite west-side restaurants.
- Allow a little extra travel time instead of avoiding the area.
- Order directly from local businesses when that option is available.
- Share their specials and social-media posts with friends.
- Recommend west-side businesses to family and coworkers.
- Leave a thoughtful review after a positive experience.
- Be patient with restaurants, employees and drivers navigating the detours.
Most importantly, remember that these businesses did not choose the disruption. They are adapting to a situation outside their control while continuing to serve our community.
Why Locally Focused Delivery Matters
The bridge project also highlights why communities benefit from locally focused delivery options.
Delivery is not only about convenience. During construction, temporary closures and major traffic changes, delivery can help connect customers with businesses they might otherwise skip because of the added travel.
Skagit Dash is being built specifically for Skagit County. Our goal is to work alongside local restaurants, understand the challenges they face and help them reach customers throughout our community—including during times when getting across town is more difficult.
Skagit Dash is not yet accepting delivery orders, but situations like the West Mount Vernon Bridge project reinforce why we are building it. A local delivery service should do more than move an order from one location to another. It should strengthen the connection between local customers, restaurants and drivers.
Let’s Keep Showing Up for West Mount Vernon
The bridge will eventually reopen in both directions, but west-side businesses need community support throughout the months ahead.
If you have a favorite restaurant or business on the west side, keep showing up. Place an order, make the trip, share a recommendation or tell someone about a place they should try.
A detour may add a few minutes to the journey. Choosing to support a local business can make a difference that lasts much longer.
